Riffer 4 sequencer view: six colour-coded tracks of pattern blocks, the Create, Remix, Instant and Edit controls, and an on-screen keyboard.

Riffer 4, Audiomodern, sequencer view

I'm a freelance audio software developer specializing in C++, JUCE and DSP. For the past year I've worked closely with Atlantic Audio Development, contributing to a wide range of audio software for companies in the music technology industry.

Released products I've worked on include Riffer 4 for Audiomodern, QUANCE and WaveBalance for Codwaves, and LatencyFix.

I'm currently open to new projects and collaborations.

Experience

For the past year I've worked closely with Atlantic Audio Development, a C++ and JUCE audio development agency, as a freelance audio software developer. Through that collaboration I've contributed to software for established companies in professional audio and music technology.

The work has covered audio plugin development, GUI and interaction implementation, real-time DSP, bug fixing and maintenance, cross-platform compatibility, plugin host integration, and testing and technical validation.

    Riffer 4

    Audiomodern, with Atlantic Audio Development

    Commercially Released

A MIDI generation and sequencing plugin with several generation engines, MIDI editing and interactive composition workflows.

    What I did

As part of the Atlantic Audio Development team, I built and maintained JUCE interface components and interactive MIDI controls, and worked on the sequencing and randomization workflows, parameter controls and preset navigation. I also fixed undo-related and interaction bugs inside the established codebase, working through Git branches alongside other developers.

C++, JUCE, GUI development, MIDI sequencing, Application state, Event handling, Custom LookAndFeel, Xcode, Git

  • QUANCE plugin interface: a spectrum display with the resonance curve and frequency-range handles, beside the Amount, Detail, Speed, Mix and Output controls.

    QUANCE

    Codwaves, with Atlantic Audio Development

    Commercially Released

An audio processing plugin built around analysis-driven workflows, including a Learn function and loudness-related processing.

    What I did

I investigated and corrected DSP bugs, reworked Learn so that newly learned frequency ranges replace earlier manual or preset ranges, and reduced transient overshoot in the loudness processing. I fixed GUI crashes around frequency-range interactions, investigated data races, and worked on interface freezes on Windows after display changes, which involved vblank synchronization and Direct2D rendering. I also built automated regression tests and validated the plugin across DAWs on Windows and macOS.

C++, JUCE, DSP, Windows, macOS, Direct2D, DXGI, Multithreading, REAPER, Ableton Live, Automated testing

  • WaveBalance plugin interface in dark mode: a large target-level dial, Threshold, Ceiling and Response controls, and the Static and Ride mode switch.

    WaveBalance

    Codwaves, with Atlantic Audio Development

    Commercially Released

An auto gain staging plugin with real-time gain control, metering and a focused mixing workflow.

    What I did

My work focused on correctness: verifying applied gain and metering, bypass and latency handling, the Static and Ride modes, and limiter and headroom behavior. I ran DSP null tests to confirm deterministic output and state recall, investigated transient overshoot, and validated the plugin across VST3, AU and AAX in Pro Tools, REAPER and Ableton Live.

C++, JUCE, DSP, VST3, AAX, AU, Pro Tools, REAPER, Ableton Live, Automated test harnesses

  • Plugin audits and engineering

Confidential client, with Atlantic Audio Development

    Client projects

Engineering and technical audits across several JUCE audio plugins for one client, including an instrument.

    What I did

I audited plugin code for real-time safety, parameter behavior and host integration, and worked on the issues those audits raised.

On the audio side the work covered real-time buffer handling, audio buffer and region safety, DSP correctness and high-sample-rate compatibility, together with plugin parameter behavior, host automation and parameter parsing.

On state and host integration I worked on session restoration, plugin state serialization, host undo and redo integration and plugin lifecycle behavior, tested in REAPER and Ableton Live.

Other reliability work included audio import and background processing, playback and loop reliability, offline license verification with persistence, fallback and consistency across plugin instances, a Windows UI freeze linked to display synchronization, and automated regression tests.

  • LatencyFix LF Remote 2.0.0 window showing the signal phase offset readout in milliseconds, engine state, output gain, buffer correction and hardware sync status.
    Image: LatencyFix

    LatencyFix

    LatencyFix, with Atlantic Audio Development

    Commercially Released

A remote recording solution that keeps DAW sessions aligned for distributed collaboration. Artists in different locations can record together in one studio session, with every take landing in time, as if they were in the same room. Atlantic Audio Development's work on it includes Ableton Remote Scripts, Pro Tools PTSL automation and the product UI.

  • Vocal chop instrument

Undisclosed client, with Atlantic Audio Development

    In development

A JUCE vocal chop instrument, as a plugin and a standalone app: it extracts the vocal from a recording, finds usable chops and maps them to pads and a keyboard.

    What I did

I integrated the machine-learning stem separation used for vocal extraction: MDX and Mel-Band models running through ONNX Runtime on macOS and Windows, and a native Apple MLX implementation of the Mel-Band model covering the spectrogram, band split, chunked inference and weight loading. Separation runs as a background job with cached results.

On top of it I built chop detection and ranking, the workstation interface with pads, waveform markers and keyboard, cleanup processing, tempo sync, and pitch and time processing with F0 detection and formant preservation, covered by Catch2 plugin tests.

C++, JUCE, ONNX Runtime, Apple MLX, Stem separation, DSP, Pitch shifting, Time stretching, MIDI, CMake, Catch2

  • FIELDS interface: waveform displays with loop regions for sound layers A and B, envelope and volume controls for each layer, a central Texture to Tonal blend knob, and reverb, filter and delay controls.

    FIELDS

Independent project by Carlos Garín, product concept by Alex Aller

    In progress, collecting sounds

A sample instrument made to preserve sounds that are disappearing: recordings of protected animals and places, captured by recordists who travelled to remote locations to make them.

    What I did

I developed FIELDS myself, from the sampler engine to the interface. Two sample layers each blend a clean and an excited version of a recording, with loops set over the waveform, envelopes, filter, delay and reverb, and a sound browser with search and presets.

C++, JUCE, Sampler, MIDI, DSP, Custom LookAndFeel

  • Polyphonic Guitar Tuner

    Personal project

    Machine learning research

Musical note recognition using neural networks.

    What I did

I developed a musical note recognition system based on fully connected neural networks in Python and TensorFlow, created the audio datasets used for training, and evaluated different network architectures.
